The Breathwork Safety Starter Kit
How to Breathe Safely, Honor Your Limits, and Listen to Your Nervous System
Welcome, Beautiful Breather
You may already know how powerful breathwork is, it opens doors, sometimes wide ones, and gives us access to places in the body and spirit we may have forgotten.
It can be freeing.
It can be emotional.
And sometimes, it can feel unfamiliar.
This guide was created to offer you grounding, clarity, and kindness as you enter your breathwork practice. Whether this is your first session or your hundredth, you deserve to feel informed, supported, and in full control of your experience. At Compass of Compassion, I believe that you don’t have to push to heal. You don’t need to force a breakthrough and you don’t need to override your body’s wisdom.
You simply need safety, awareness, and permission.

Your Breath, Your Pace: Encouragement
1. What Makes Breathwork “Safe”?
Safety in breathwork means that:
Your nervous system isn’t overwhelmed
You feel in control of your experience
You are empowered to slow down, pause, or stop anytime
You’re not asked to push beyond your edge
You’re supported by a facilitator who honors trauma-awareness, informed consent, and your body’s pace
Safety isn’t just physical it’s emotional, energetic, and spiritual too. It means feeling free to be with what’s true in your body, without judgment, holding space.
2. Understanding Your Window of Tolerance
We all have a capacity called the Window of Tolerance where our nervous system can stay present and regulated. Inside our window, we’re able to feel and move through experience. Outside that window, we may become triggered, overwhelmed, numb, or disconnected.
You might notice you’re in your window when:
You feel steady, curious, or connected
You’re emotional, but still aware of your breath
Your body feels engaged, even if sensations are strong
You might be outside your window if:
You feel panicked, frozen, spaced out, or emotionally flooded
Your breath becomes tight or strained
You feel disconnected from your body
These are signs it’s time to pause, ground, or soften your breath. There’s no wrong way to respond. Your body is talking to you and you’re listening.
Visualize three zones:
Green Zone: Calm, present, engaged
Yellow Zone: Tense, hyperaware, restless
Red Zone: Shut down, overwhelmed, panicked
With the guide above it is important to note breathwork is most supportive when practiced in the Green or gentle Yellow zone. If you move into Red, the breath should be softened or paused.
Tip: You can print a Window of Tolerance visual or use a journal to track your states over time.
3. Signs You Might Need to Pause or Soften:
You feel overwhelmed, dizzy, or out of your body
Emotions feel too intense to stay with
You’re holding your breath or tensing up
You feel like your body or mind are shutting down
You’re experiencing trauma flashbacks or panic
Pausing doesn’t mean the work has stopped it’s about being present with your experience, knowing that includes rest. Pausing means something is integrating. Slowing down is a wise, empowered choice.
4. Consent in Breathwork: You Get to Choose
In every breathwork space I hold, you have full permission to honor what feels right in your body. That means:
You always have the option to modify, pause, or stop
You are not expected to have a breakthrough
You’re never pressured to go deeper than you want
You’re invited to explore emotion
You can ask questions, take breaks, or breathe at your own rhythm
Consent isn’t a one-time checkbox. It’s a conversation. And you get to lead it. You don’t have to say yes to anything that doesn’t feel right in your body. Your “no” is sacred, let’s honor it.
5. Body Check-In Script (Use Before or During Your Session)
Take a moment and ask yourself:
How does my body feel right now?
What emotions are present?
What kind of breath feels safe and nourishing to me today?
Am I willing to stay connected to my body and pause if needed?
What would respect feel like for me in this session?
You might write your answers down before a session, or gently check in during longer sessions. There are no wrong answers only honest ones.
6. Your Breath, Your Pace
Your breath is your anchor. It will never ask you to go anywhere your soul isn’t ready to go.
Sometimes, breathwork feels big.
Sometimes, it feels quiet.
Sometimes, it brings up joy.
Sometimes, grief.
All of it is valid. All of it belongs.
You don’t need to force anything or to have a peak experience. You just need to be present and keep choosing to come back to your self, one breath at a time.
There’s no gold medal for breathing the hardest. The deepest healing often comes when we feel safe enough to soften.
If you remember one thing, let it be this:
You have permission to slow down.
You are allowed to ask for support.
You have permission to be tender.
I will always honor the wisdom of your pace.
