I remember the first time I intentionally held my breath after an exhale during a yoga practice. My body tensed slightly. My thoughts became louder. It felt like the edges of my comfort zone were pressing in, immediately I wanted to take a deep breath but I stayed with it, gently, curiously. As the inhale came, something had shifted, within my body, I felt steadier, relieved for the inhalation. What I learned about was my capacity to create calm inside, safety within. By doing this we can train our mind to increase its tolerance with physical uncomfort and increased anxiety by staying with the sensations. We create positive stress and it is one of the strengths of breathwork training.

Not all stress is harmful. In fact, some stress especially when approached intentionally and in short doses has the potential to be incredibly healing because it pushes the limits we think exist in our minds or bodies. Intermittent hypoxia is the result of breathing practices rooted ancient breath traditions supported by science and has the potential to improve your physical, emotional, and hormonal health. Certain styles of breathwork can help you build resilience from the inside out by providing the conditions for the Intermittent Hypoxia to present itself.

What Is Intermittent Hypoxia?

Intermittent hypoxia refers to short, controlled periods where your oxygen levels are intentionally reduced. Usually achieved through specific breathing patterns, like holding your breath after your exhale (known as retention), or through slow, nasal breathing with limited air intake. Unlike chronic or accidental oxygen deprivation (which is harmful), intermittent hypoxia is short, intentional, and therapeutic. It is important to note it mimics certain stress conditions to your body without causing harm and trains your physiology to build resilience by adapting and growing stronger. It’s like sending your nervous system to the gym… but for your breath, brain, and hormones.

How Intermittent Hypoxia Works in the Body

When you practice intermittent hypoxia, your body:

  • Activates survival pathways without going into panic mode

Chronic stress keeps cortisol levels elevated which leads to burnout and inflammation. Breathwork helps recalibrate cortisol so it’s released in healthier patterns reducing anxiety, fatigue, and chronic overwhelm.

  • Stimulates Human Growth Hormone (HGH)

Research shows that intermittent hypoxia can boost HGH levels a hormone that supports tissue repair, metabolism, and muscle growth. HGH is part of the body’s rejuvenation response to temporary stress.

  • Supports Thyroid and Adrenal Balance

Chronic stress burns out your adrenals and disrupts thyroid function. Breathwork, especially paired with intermittent hypoxia, tones the vagus nerve and supports the parasympathetic nervous system allowing the endocrine system to come back into balance.

Intermittent Hypoxia is About Resilience, Not Perfection

You don’t need advanced techniques to benefit. Here are a few gentle ways to explore:

1. Exhale Retention

  • Inhale slowly through the nose

  • Exhale gently through the nose

  • At the end of your exhale, hold your breath for a few seconds (start with 5–10 seconds)

  • Then inhale again and breathe normally

This builds carbon dioxide tolerance and improves oxygen efficiency.

2. Nasal Breathing During Exercise

Try walking or doing light movement using only nasal breathing. This restricts oxygen slightly and builds endurance while training the nervous system to stay calm under stress.

3. Slow, Rhythmic Breathing (Coherent Breath)

Slowing down the breath to 4–6 breaths per minute (in through the nose and then out through the nose or mouth ) will tone the vagus nerve by activating the parasympathetic nervous system and balance hormones, even without breath holds. See if you can reduce the amount of breaths to 4, meaning you only inhale and exhale 4 times within a 60 second period you’re building endurance and depth within.

Intermittent hypoxia is a powerful tool but like all breathwork, it’s not about pushing or achieving. It’s about rebuilding a relationship with your body, your breath, and your capacity to hold more life. Respecting what your body is capable of today, understanding each day offers us a different available breath. Your body is incredibly intelligent. When you learn how to give it small doses of a healthy challenge, you awaken it’s deep healing potential, from your cells to your soul.

Why Positive Stress Builds True Resilience

Resilience doesn’t come from avoidance it comes from meeting challenge with presence time after time, creating the space we need from the inside out. Breathwork shows us that we can sit within our intensity without panic, stretch without snapping, and soften even when our systems want to close.

That’s how we grow, how we heal and how we learn to trust the body again. By creating space for your body to remember its strength, not prove it.

Intermittent hypoxia is a powerful tool but it’s not about performance.

Some days, your capacity will feel expansive.
