High Ventilation Breathwork: Ancient Practice, Modern Science

When Breath Meets Science: What This New Study Tells Us (And Why It Matters for Healing)

It is not uncommon to experience breathwork as spiritual, intuitive or even healing. We feel something shift inside us without needing to explain how or why. Finally, science is catching up and showing us that our breathing when carefully practiced, has measurable, brain-body effects. A recent paper (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763423004220) explains exactly how and why how we breathe (especially in patterns) can shape our nervous system.

Breathwork is old, like ancient, from yogic pranayama to Tibetan monks practicing tummo to the modern Revelation Breathwork, people have used intentional breathing (pranayama) to heal, awaken, and connect to themselves for thousands of years. The article listed above discusses High Ventilation Breathwork (HVB) practices like Revelation Breathwork and looks at how these breathing patterns affect our brains, bodies, and emotions.

What is High Ventilation Breathwork?

Unlike slower breathing practices (which typically calm the nervous system), HBV uses fast, deeper, continuous breathing patterns. These breathing rhythms often bring physical sensations such as tingling, muscle release, temperature changes in the body. Or emotion changes such as crying, laughter or physical sounds (grunt, sigh, scream, etc). With these sensations may come a shift in consciousness which may allow for visions, deep insights or awarenesses, ego dissolving, or a sense of belonging or oneness. This is why HVB is sometimes described as “psychedelic breathwork.”

What Science is Finding

The paper highlights several important items:

🌿 Altered States – After 8–15 minutes, people can enter non-ordinary states of consciousness. Some people described mystical experiences similar to low-dose psychedelics.

🌿 Emotional Healing and Regulation – Studies suggest HVB can reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

🌿 Resilience and Wellbeing – People reported increased self-awareness, expanded viewpoints, greater connection with others, and improved life satisfaction after breathwork workshops.

🌿 Immune and Stress Benefits – Revelation Breathwork style breathing has been shown to help regulate inflammation and stress hormones.

What’s Happening inside the Body

High ventilation breathwork will push the nervous system into a unique state and because we are breathing quickly, we exhale and release more carbon dioxide (CO₂) than usual, leading to:

  • Alkalosis (a temporary shift in blood pH).

  • Cerebral blood flow changes, reducing oxygen delivery to parts of the brain.

  • Heightened neuronal excitability, which may create the vivid experiences people describe.

  • Temporary stress response, followed by a reset which can build long-term resilience from the inside out.

I like to think of it as “controlled stress” because it helps the nervous system learn new patterns.

What This Means for Our Nervous System & Healing

  1. Regulation: Breathwork doesn’t make us shut down emotions or push them aside. Instead, it gives us tools for regulating ourselves, helping the nervous system move from fight-or-flight into rest, digest, and repair. From here our systems will catch up and we can enter into a state of calm.

  2. Strengthening Inner Safety: A consistent, intentional breath pattern can increase feelings of safety within. As the sensation of safety increases within you, your nervous system relaxes its guard. This opens up space for healing. Pain, trauma, discomfort and/or overwhelm can be met from a place of grounding and kindness, compassion.

  3. Resilience Builds Over Time: Just like physical fitness a breath regulation practice helps you to increase your capacity. Sensations that once felt unbearable can become bearable. The brain will learn how to respond differently to the triggers around us.

  4. Presence, Compassion, and Choice: These practices give us the tools to respond rather than react. Allowing us to stay present and let compassion to rise instead of judgment.

Safety & Considerations

The paper in the link talks about how powerful HVB is which means it needs to be approached with care and support.

⚠️ Not everyone should practice without guidance - especially those with heart conditions, epilepsy, or certain mental health challenges.

⚠️ HVB should ideally be facilitated in a safe, trauma-informed environment and not attempted alone for long periods.

When done responsibly, it can be life-changing.

At Compass of Compassion, this kind of scientific paper not only verifies what I do, it adds value the service I offer. I hold space for whatever arises for you which means no spiritual bypassing. I don’t push you into something hard, but will guide you through, when you’re ready. I believe your nervous system deserves rest and repair. This allows you to embody the wisdom within you to guide your experience, creating space for your body and spirit to release what’s been held too long.

If you’re curious about what this might feel like in your own nervous system, I invite you to join a Revelation Breathwork session. Let’s explore breathing not just for relief, but for renewal. Handled with care, your breath will open doors to transformation, resilience, and peace.
