You Have Permission to Do the Thing: Reclaiming Your Inner Voice

Are you still waiting for someone to say it’s okay for you to rest, speak up, live in a way that is authentic to you, or walk away? In this blog post we will discuss why we wait for permission, how to reclaim your voice, and how breathwork helps you trust your truth again.

A Moment I Almost Didn’t Listen

A few years ago, I had a quiet but persistent nudge to make a change in my work. Not a dramatic shift just a pivot, even though everything in my body said yes, my mind went into overdrive: What will people think? Will it make sense? Shouldn’t I wait until I have everything perfectly mapped out? I kept waiting for some external signal, and then one day, after a breathwork session, the answer dropped in like a whisper:

You already know. You just haven’t given yourself permission to trust it.

It wasn’t thunderous or dramatic but it was true and from that moment, I began.

Why We Wait for Permission (Even As Adults)

Even when we’re fully capable, wise, and grown, many of us still find ourselves hesitating to rest, speak up, set boundaries, change direction or course in life and to yes or even no.

Why? Often it traces back to how we learned safety. If you grew up in an environment with rigid expectations, emotional suppression, or conditional love, your nervous system may have learned that the safest thing to do was stay small, stay quiet, and wait for approval. You might have internalized the belief that permission comes from outside of you from authority figures, systems, or social cues. That safety only exists when you follow the rules, stay in line, or please the people around you. While those coping strategies once kept you safe, they may now be the very things holding you back, keeping you stuck.

Signs You’re Still Waiting for Permission

These are subtle but common ways this patterning shows up:

  • You hesitate to say no, even when you know something’s not right

  • You feel guilty resting or slowing down, even when you’re exhausted

  • You seek outside validation before making personal decisions

  • You override your gut feelings with logic, “shoulds,” or people-pleasing

It is important to note, these aren’t signs that you’re weak or broken, they’re signs that you learned survival through suppression and now you’re unlearning it which takes time.

The Truth About Permission

Here’s the truth, the part no one may have ever told you: You don’t need permission to honor your essence, but it’s okay if it still feels like you do. This is the tender paradox of healing. It is your birthright to choose yourself, to trust your inner knowing and to listen to your body to make decisions.

Sometimes we need someone else to model it for us and hold space until we can hold it for ourselves. This is not weakness, it’s called co-regulation and that’s what healing in relationship looks like, in community.

Listening to the Body First

Your body knows the truth before your mind catches up. The clenching in your chest. The sinking feeling in your gut. The fatigue that no amount of caffeine can fix. These are sensations not signs of failure, but symptoms that something within you is ready to shift and is calling for action. When you override these messages, you train your system to keep waiting. When you pause and listen without needing to fix what is coming up for you, you begin to build trust within, the only trust that really matters.

Breathwork is one way to tune in and energy healing is another. Through our breath, we access what exists below the noise: our beliefs and fears are the stories that keep us waiting for permission. With each breath, you tell your nervous system: It’s okay to feel. It’s okay to listen. It’s okay to choose differently now. It’s okay to trust myself. It’s ok to witness myself and the release of what comes up without judgement or the need to create a story around the sensations I experience.

Energy healing complements this by helping uncover and resolve subconscious stories often inherited or outdated that keep us stuck in waiting mode. We can access the subconscious mind and review your life themes to consider how old the story is, when it originated and how to resolve it allowing for greater clarity within.

What Does Permission Look Like?

It might look like resting when no one else is. Leaving a relationship that looks fine on the outside but is anything but. Changing careers. Changing pace. Changing your mind. Or simply saying: No, I don’t want that anymore, I want this instead. Permission are the things you do to honor yourself, to not abandon your preferences, needs, choices. Sometimes it’s a whisper, other times it’s a full-body knowing, but either way, it begins within you.

You’re Allowed to Begin Again

We often wait for the world to approve our choices before we trust them but we miss the deeper invitation which is to stop waiting. To begin again. To let yourself be the one who says: Yes. You’re allowed. And if that still feels hard, let this be your sign:

You don’t have to wait for someone else to tell you it’s time. You are the compass now. You are the permission. You are the wise guide you’ve been waiting for. Take the jump.
