How You Relate to the Issue IS the Issue
Why your beliefs and perception are shaping your life and how to begin shifting them
We all go through hard times, feeling stuck, unseen, overwhelmed, or misunderstood. Maybe someone disappoints us or we make a mistake. Life didn’t unfold the way we hoped, a failed expectation, the job, relationship, or diagnosis. At first glance, it seems like the event itself is the problem. What if the real issue isn’t what’s happening, but how we’re relating to it? This is one of the most important truths I’ve learned through healing work and often the least talked about:
How you relate to the issue is the issue.
It’s not about denying pain, bypassing trauma, or pretending everything is fine. It’s about realizing that we don’t experience life directly we experience our perception of it. Typically what causes the deepest suffering isn’t the event, it’s how we interpret it, the meaning we give it, and how we relate to it.
Let me explain why.
We Don’t Experience Life Directly, We Experience It Through a Filter
Every moment of your life is filtered through your belief system, these are subconscious thoughts, stories, and emotional imprints that were shaped by:
Childhood experiences
Caregivers and family systems
Cultural or religious messages
Repeated emotional patterns
Past trauma or rejection
Your nervous system’s adaptive responses
These filters act like tinted glasses. They color and shade how we see and interpret the world, and most of the time we’re not even aware we’re wearing them. That means you’re not responding to life itself… you’re responding to your interpretation of it. Your perceptual lens colors everything you experience in life. All events, people, places and experiences are filtered through your lens, luckily we can clean the glasses and perception when we review our filters.
Here’s how the cycle works:
Something happens (You don’t get the job. Someone ignores your message. You make a mistake.)
Your filter or belief interprets it (I’m not good enough. I’m invisible. I always mess things up. No one likes me.)
You react (You shut down. Spiral. Self-sabotage. Overcompensate.)
This cycle repeats over and over again until you become aware of it.
How Filters Shape More Than Emotions
Your belief system doesn’t just impact how you feel, it shapes how you move through the world in your:
Relationships: You choose who feels “familiar” even if they’re unhealthy
Health: You may ignore your body’s needs or unconsciously recreate stress
Career: You may hold back, procrastinate, or accept less than you deserve
Self-Worth: You might measure your value through productivity or others’ approval
Spiritual Life: You might avoid connection with Spirit, feeling “unworthy” or “not ready”
Your beliefs decide what feels safe and until you shift them, you’ll live inside a reality designed by your past experiences.
Example: One Event, Three Filtered Realities
Imagine a friend doesn’t respond to your text.
One person might think: “They must be busy. No big deal.”
Another might think: “I must have done something wrong. I knew I talked too much yesterday. They’re mad at me.”
Another might spiral into: “No one really cares about me anyway. I always end up alone.”
It is the same situation with three various emotional experiences, what is different is each person’s internal filters. These beliefs create our emotions, reactions, and sense of self-worth and most of them were formed before we had the tools to question them. They were our original support or survival tactics.
Examples of How Filter-Based Beliefs Show Up
Belief: “I’m not good enough.”
Filter result: Feedback often feels like an attack. You overwork, over give, or avoid taking risks.
Belief: “People always leave.”
Filter result: You push others away first. You never let yourself get too close. Or you stay hypervigilant for signs of rejection.
Belief: “I have to be perfect to be loved.”
Filter result: You’re constantly anxious, overanalyzing every word, never resting. You feel empty even when people praise you.
Belief: “Healing has to be hard.”
Filter result: You bypass ease. You resist joy. You expect struggle and miss opportunities for grace.
These aren’t conscious thoughts most of the time they run in the background, like outdated software controlling your present experience but the good news is you can change these limiting beliefs or filters.
The Pattern We Live In (Until We Don’t)
Here’s the cycle that plays out usually for years, sometimes decades:
Something happens → Your filter activates → You react
↓
Your reaction reinforces the belief → Your belief shapes your next experience
↓
The cycle repeats… until it’s brought into awareness and healed.
This is why the same emotional challenges keep surfacing:
The same type of partner, over and over
The same workplace conflict, again and again
The same self-sabotage, no matter how much “work” you do
It’s not because you’re stuck, it’s because your filter is running the show, keeping you safe in the old patterns it knows.
The Good News: You Can Change the Filter
You’re not stuck with the beliefs you inherited and you don’t have to keep reacting from the same emotional place. You can’t change what you don’t see but once you become aware of your patterns, you can begin to shift them.
Ask yourself:
What story am I telling myself about this situation?
Whose voice is that in my head? Mine, or someone else’s?
Is this belief even true? Is there evidence to support it?
How else could I see this?
What belief might be shaping my experience right now?
Once you see the filter, you can begin to choose differently because these small inquiries crack open the door to healing. When you stop reacting from old patterns, you make space for something new.
Rewriting the Cycle
Healing doesn’t mean life stops happening, it means you stop handing the steering wheel to your subconscious.
The healing cycle looks like this:
Old pattern:
Event → Filter → Reaction → Reinforcement
New pattern:
Event → Awareness → Choice → Empowered response → Healing
Creating new patterns doesn’t mean you won’t ever feel triggered but it does mean you don’t have to be controlled by it. Here is the space where choice lives and choice is where healing begins. This is the sacred turning point, the space between stimulus and response, where transformation starts.
At Compass of Compassion, We Heal the Filters
In my work with Theta Healing and energy medicine, we don’t just talk about your patterns we gently clear the beliefs that created them and redefine your new healthy, resilient programs.
Together, we:
Identify root beliefs shaped by early life, trauma, or culture
Clear the energetic charge held in the body
Reprogram beliefs to reflect your current truth
Support nervous system safety so the shift can integrate
Reconnect you with your inner compass and authentic perception
You don’t have to keep living through a filter that keeps you stuck. My work is about changing how you relate to the world around you, because once your perception shifts, everything else begins to as well, by creating a new lens one shaped by worthiness, peace, and self-compassion.
The Filter Isn’t Who You Are — You’re Just Running Old Code
What you’ve believed isn’t your fault, it was learned and what was learned can be unlearned. You are not your beliefs, you are not your reactions and you are not your filter. You are the one witnessing it all and you always have the power to choose something new. This is your invitation to look at your life and ask: What if this isn’t about the issue at all? What if it’s about how I’m relating to it and what I believe it means/defines about me? When you begin to heal the way you see yourself and the world, the cycle finally breaks. Then you get to write a new one—one rooted in choice, clarity, and compassion. Ready to change the lens you’ve been living through? Because now we know, how you relate to your life… is your life.
Let’s shift the filter together, because healing doesn’t begin with the world changing, it begins with how you see it. If you’re ready to uncover what’s shaping your experience beneath the surface reach out.
